Psalm:39 Devotional

Our life is fleeting. God has numbered out days.

  1. Psalm 39:4-5 (ESV):
    • “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah.”
  2. James 4:14 (ESV):
    • “Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”
  3. Psalm 90:10 (ESV):
    • “The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.”

Well I go into this Devotional with a somber reflection of the brevity of life, the Bema seat and God’s judgment. Lately I’ve been exposed to people dying that I have met breifly-one time meetings. Just passing by. My brother’s roommate who overdosed on drugs; my friend’s mother whom I only met once. Gone the next day. In each of these instances, I hesitated to give the Gospel. They were quick interactions; first time meetings. I reflect on what I could have done. However, I also know that God is sovereign and His elect will come to saving faith. As we live out this life as saved individuals, lets live for Him who is to come; not living like the natural man who does not know God and whose mind is set on the flesh. 1 Corinthians 2:14: (The natural man does not have the Spirit of God) Romans 8:7-8 (The natural man’s mind is set on the flesh) Ephesians 2:1-3 (The natural man lives according to the passions of the flesh) Are you in the faith? Check your heart (2 Corinthians 13:5)

Our life is but a breath. Here one day and gone tomorrow. Are you going to live for yourself or for God and His purposes? What is your ultimate hope in? What do you believe will ULTIMATELY make you happy? Fame? Finances? Women? Power? Sex? Children? Or are you Ultimately living for the Lord and His purposes, in light of eternity because we know our days are numbered and our hope is in the Lord?
