Which Jesus do you believe in?

Breezy murmurs, a fleeting conversation. My icy breath sweeps through the humid, cold night. A misty cloud forms with every exhalation. The air turns crisp as the cold wind carries every cloud exhaled toward the ever frigid sea of dreams. One breath. One cold wind. One sea of dreams. Everything I said was being briskly carried from my breath by the wind to the sea. In a few moments, it was done. So is life. Every breath we take is one more day we have to live. Another day to repent. The wind is God’s common grace to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of this life carried along by His sustaining grace. And the sea of dreams is where we think we will end up. If we are good enough, many say, we will end up here. Here in the sea of dreams where Heaven is. Where Jesus is.

Many people are deceived. They believe that If I just believe, I will go to heaven. After all, doesn’t scripture say in John 3:16 that “For God so loved the World that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life.” This is indeed true. But may I ask, which Jesus are you believing in? The Apostle John is clear when he writes in John 20:31- “but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Well even the demons believe and shudder. James 2:19- “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this and they tremble in terror.” Just believing in Jesus is not enough. Saving faith requires trusting in Christ alone and what He did on the cross. The true Christ. Believing and repenting of your sins. There will be many, many surprises in heaven. Salvation is doctrinal. We need to believe in the right Jesus to have a saving faith- to be a Christian.

                   Mormonism

On the week of Oct.18, 2012 the Billy Graham association removed Mormonism from their list of cults. Astonishing. Mormons (Latter Day Saints) Do not believe in the God of the Bible. The essential beliefs of what it means to be a Christian are not the same. Below are what many Mormons believe (I understand that not all Mormons believe in the same things.)

  1. There are many Gods (In fact unlimited Gods) Every Mormon has the chance to become a God if they are good enough to reach exaltation or the celestial heaven.
  2. There is a mother Goddess- Christ and the Devil were born as spirit Children. In fact, the God of this age was a man on another planet who is now exalted because he reached the celestial heaven.
  3. The trinity is not 1 God in 3 persons but 3 Separate Gods.

Where do these Ideas come from? It’s important to note that Mormons (They like being called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have at least 4 sources of truth- The Bible (Seen as corrupt. They like to say it works in tandem with the Bible), The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, and the current day Prophet that supposedly speaks out revelation from God.

  • Christ acquired a sinful nature
  • We are kept saved by keeping the law
  • The sins of men are laid on Satan

Jehovah Witness (Source The Gospel Coalition/Personal Evangelism)

  1. Jehovah Witnesses do not believe in the Trinity because it’s never used in the Bible. However, all three persons of the Trinity are called God in scripture.

God the Father 1 Peter 1:2- according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

God the Son John 20:28- Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Hebrews:1- Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

God the Holy Spirit– Acts 5:3-4 But Peter said, “ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for your self part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God. When Ananias heard these word, he fell down and breathed his last.

In creation- Genesis 1:26- Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” (Referencing the Trinity)

Jehovah Witnesses do not believe that Jesus is God.

When evangelizing to some Jehovah Witnesses, they told me that Jesus was not God based on John:17. Some claim that John 17:3 negates the deity of Christ. Jesus, after all, referred to the Father as the only true God. They would say Jesus was created by Jehovah, the only true God and Jesus is another god small g.

Well we have to look at what was happening in the culture at the time. Many were Polytheists. Jesus was counterfeiting the polytheist’s ideology that many Gods exist. In addition, many, many texts affirm Christ’s Deity. The whole Gospel of John proclaims the deity of Christ. He is the creator of the World, the great I AM that existed before Abraham. He died for our sins and rose again, taking on God’s wrath. In fact, if he hasn’t been raised from the dead, our faith is futile. He is expressly stated as equal with the Father in Philippians :2. He is our Great God and savior (Titus 2:10-13) He is referred to as Lord and many other titles. This is not a secondary issue. If Christ is not God, there is not Christianity. There is no resurrection that saves from our sins. This is a primary issue. If Christ is not God, we are still in our sins and there is not salvation. That is how important this doctrine is.

Other beliefs-

  • There is no hell
  • There are 2 redeemed peoples. The 144,000 and the “Other sheep”
  • Salvation requires obedience of rules. It’s not by grace through faith.

If you are in the Jehovah Witnesses religion, I pray that you would believe in the True God- The trinity, Elohim that is One God comprised of three persons. The Jesus of the Bible who is God. Who saves from our sins. The fact is that Jehovah Witnesses is a cult religion that is not Biblical. False doctrine leads to Hell. We have to believe in the true Jesus of the Bible. The good news is that God can save anyone at anytime. There is still time to repent!

Why am I writing this article? Many, many people are deceived on who Christ is. In my next article, I’ll support who Jesus Christ is and why from scripture. But for now, Christ is the second person of the trinity; He is the forever God-Man who died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead. If you truly believe in this Christ, the Christ of the Bible, you will be saved from God’s wrath. There is one God in three persons. Christ is uncreated and has always existed from the beginning. This is the Messiah, the Alpha and Omega, the Prophet, Priest, and King of a better covenant. If you confess with your mouth that he is Lord and believe in your heart that he has risen from the dead, you will be saved. We were sinners headed for hell. But now, by trusting in what Christ did alone on the cross, we have a new heart. If you haven’t come to Christ, believing in the true Christ of the Bible, believe and repent today. Our days are numbered, God is great, and He will get the glory in the end. I pray that you will believe in the Christ of the Bible. Today is the day of salvation. It’s no accident that you are here reading these very words. To God be the Glory!

A brief look at my goals

Goals. Why are setting goals important?

Not setting Goals sets one up for passivity and directionless- Sometimes leading to sin

It is the passive man that is steered in any direction whatsoever- Wherever the wind blows. He doesn’t know where he is going and therefore ends up in unfamiliar territory. He is like the young man in Proverbs:7 who hasn’t counted the cost of travelling next to the door of the prostitutes’ house. He is a man of no conviction and hasn’t thought through his motivations, identity, working hard, etc. Not setting goals leads to idleness, sin, and directionless. You aren’t living out the God-Fearing, God-Centered man you are called to be. How should the goals of a Godly man be? In the following paragraphs, I’ve outlined some goals all under the Ultimate Motivation-

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

We are not our own. We are Christ’s and were bought at a price. In the Words of John Piper- “You are doubly bought. Not only did he create us but he purchased us.” We live to glorify God for that is why were even created. Isaiah 43:7- I have made them for my glory. Westminster Catechism- The chief end of man is to glorify God.

Goal 1– Live out you identity in Christ and pursue the means of Sanctification

Stay in the Word, Stay in fellowship/community, stay in prayer. Live out the commands of the Bible.

Pray for grace. Pursue the Word with all your might for it is transformative and helps us become more like Christ, dependent upon God’s grace. Philippians 1:6- He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

[Reading Isaiah, Don’t Waste your Life]

Goal 2- Search me an know my heart

Our motivations and desires can be off track or inordinate. However, as Christians, we never sin doubly. We need to be doing what we need to do and repent of our deceitful hearts. A heart that isn’t 100% pure isn’t an excuse to not follow the Bible, read the Word, or be in fellowship. For it is the passive man, the directionless man that is not involved in these things that is likely to stray and succumb to the desires of the devil and do his will. It is the Psalmist who says is Psalm 139:23- “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” Matthew 6:33- “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” 2 Corinthians 13:5

Goal 3- Love and serve others in the church community

Loving the brethren is a characteristic of a true disciple of God in 1John. The most loving thing you can do for someone is to encourage them in the means of sanctification or evangelize for these are not only what’s commanded but glorify God the most. Our works have been predetermined beforehand. We are saved unto good works (Ephesians 2:10). Our lights shine before men and give God glory. (Matthew 5:16). We are called to be examples of good works in the church so that others can follow our example. Love believes the best about others, is unifying, and has other people’s interests at heart for their good, their benefit, and ultimately with the motivation to Love others out of our love for God. Look for ways to help and improve the ministries I am currently involved in for other’s benefit.

[Welcome team, Evangelism, Adventure Club, chess ministry, book ministry]

Goal 4- Be intentional with relationships

Men’s best relationships should be with other Godly men in the church, living out the Timothy and Titus models of being above reproach, a one woman man, self controlled, sound in faith, and tested. Brotherly relationships can last a life-time. Distance needs to be created once a woman gets into a relationship. In addition, deeper relationships can be formed with the brothers.

Be a peacemaker; Establish unity in the Church under the common purpose of glorifying God and being His ambassador.

[Be involved in men’s groups, Foundation, community groups]

Goal 5- Jobs/Financial

Get a full-time teaching job; continue being a Chess Coach and Tennis Coach. Every Christian should have 3 Jars- Paying bills jar, saving jar, and giving jar. Make money to give to others, provide for a family (1 Timothy 5:8). We are stewards of what God has provided us. Try and trust God with the results. Look at Income/Expenses etc and see where you can cut and where you can increase income.

Goal 6- Be followable

Every Godly man should aspire to be followable in their Conduct, Knowledge, life lived out, love, service, heart for ministry, heart for others, sacrifice, stewardship, and motivations. We have one to live and then comes the judgment. Be followable and help others give a better account on that day.

           Introduction

According to the Pew Research Center, 48% of religious congregations accept gays and lesbians as full-fledged members[1] The human rights campaign has a Christian conversation guide for including LGBTQ in safe and inclusive congregations[2] One day this summer I went to Santa Monica beach with some friends. As I approached and went into the men’s bathroom, I was startled to see young women in there. Unbeknown to me, Santa Monica and West Hollywood have apparently passed laws that allow cities to designate public restrooms as all-gender and multi-stall (SB1194)[3] Women are allowed to go into the Men’s restroom and Men are allowed to go into the Women’s restroom. We live in a culture of chaos that doesn’t know what truth is. Everyone is confused. Plethoras of churches are going woke and fully embrace the LBTQ community. Matthew Vines, a professing Evangelical Christian, says he fully embraces the Gospel and that living a homosexual lifestyle is a second-order issue[4] According to Vines, someone can fully live as a Homosexual and be a Christian. False Gospels are springing up everywhere. If we define Biblical Counseling as face-to-face ministry of the Word to others, Matthew Vines and others are trying to use the Word and “Biblical Counseling” to counsel others toward an LGBTQ lifestyle. Our society needs the truth about homosexuality and the Bible. Because an unrepentant homosexual lifestyle is characteristic of an unbeliever, it’s not possible to fully embrace homosexuality and be a Christian.

      The Story

One day in February of 2021, my 7th grade students who professed Christ asked if I supported the LGBTQ community. I said I believe in the Bible. The Bible says it’s not possible to embrace a Homosexual lifestyle and be a Christian based on 1 Corinthians 6:9 and many other passages. Homosexuals go to hell but there is hope in Jesus Christ who died for our sins and was raised from the dead. Saying this statement to professing Christians landed me in the Principal’s office. Both of my principals were professing Christians. One went to real-life church and the other graduated from Master’s University. The principal from Real Life Chuch said that I was indoctrinating students and that instead of proclaiming the message, I should be doing it with my actions. Ultimately, I was put on administrative leave and let go. This is a story of 1st amendment rights versus the separation of church and state. My heart goes out to the students in my class who think they can live this lifestyle and be Christian. Woke ideologies are permeating youth who think they are Christians. They are somehow being counseled from God’s Word that living a homosexual lifestyle is okay. More information on that can be found on the LGBTQ hermeneutic later in my paper.

Before being let go and fired, I did some research on Real Life Church. After calling one of the pastors at Real Life Church, I learned that they don’t use the word repent at the church. In addition, half of the pastors on staff believe that homosexuality is okay. Church has become about what we love, how we feel, entertainment, and keeping up with the times all under the assumption that God’s Word is infallible, inerrant, and applied to our lives. Worship, prayer, and fellowship have taken a back seat to social justice, wokeness, politics, and feeling loved.

This story provides a backdrop of where we are in the culture. Teachers can’t express their truthful opinion without fear of getting fired or terminated. Students are confused and don’t know what it means to be a Christian or what it means to be a boy or a girl. They have become God by deciding for themselves what they want to be instead of embracing what God has decided for them. Moses writes in Genesis 1:27 that “ And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them”[5] There are two genders, children are confused, and we are a culture in chaos that needs real Biblical truth and real Biblical counseling.

                      Reparative Therapy In Process

According to Heath Lambert, reparative therapy is “a counseling approach developed by Secular Psychologists to help people turn from their struggles.” [6] Lambert mentions how the landmark case Obergefell vs Hodges was critical for same-sex couples. This case made it mandatory for states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and to recognize same-sex marriages that were validly performed in other jurisdictions. It truly is amazing how in a very short time span, people have gone from hiding their orientation to living it out without any shame whatsoever in pride. Reparative therapists have many different views of homosexuality from fully embracing it to viewing it as problematic. Reparative therapy should not be used because of its emphasis on the parent-child relationship, it’s goals and unbiblical counseling techniques. The Word is sufficient for life’s problems.

Reparative therapy starts with a critical break in the parent-child relationship.  The child experiences shame and can experience psychological damage. The result is an increased affiliation for the female gender and progressively developing sexual desires for men. Nicolosi describes the experience as “when the exotic becomes erotic.” Reparative therapy is an attempt to repair the relationship between the adult and child.

The goal of reparative therapy is to develop heterosexual desires by a corrective emotional experience. Natural, heterosexual attractions are a direct result of reducing shame. The relationship is a positive correlation. As shame diminishes, heterosexual attraction increases.

Some counselors try to use the Bible and reparative therapy together. Does that work? It’s unbiblical and unnecessary to mix the Bible and secular theories. The Bible is enough for all of life and life’s problems. It is sufficient. Reparative therapists try to argue that no one is forcing these people to come in. Reparative therapy is beneficial to society. The Biblical goal should be obedience to Christ and conformity to Christ.

Some reparative therapists use techniques that are unbiblical and even horrifying. According to cnn.com, “the conversion therapy techniques included having them strip naked in group sessions cuddling and intimate holding of others of the same-sex, violently beating an effigy of their mothers with a tennis racket, visiting bathhouses in order to be nude with father figures, and being subjected to ridicule as ‘faggots’ and ‘homos’ in mock locker room scenario. In addition, some reparative therapists encourage the use of porn to desensitize the user from the power of the image. The Biblical process for change will be discussed under the title, “Thinking about Homosexuality Biblically.”

DSM Diagnosis

In the third edition of the DSM, the APA removed the diagnosis of  “homosexuality.” [7] Why did the APA remove it? Originally, a theory of pathology existed that deemed homosexuality as a disease that deviated from the norm. Homosexuality was seen by some as immature- something that people would just grow out of. Going on, other theorists exclaimed that people were just born homosexual but it was the minority- a standard deviation or two away from the norm. Even Freud said that homosexuality is nothing to be ashamed of but just a sexual deviation. Gay activists rejected the pathological model as a major contributor to the stigma associated with homosexuality.[8] Going on, gay activists continually disrupted APA meetings and spoke at the conventions. As support for homosexuality gained more acceptance from the scientific community, it began to be normalized. Politically, gays now had more rights and are now even able to get married from a secular standpoint. Biblically, marriage is only between a man and a woman. No government can redefine marriage or the covenant that it entails. The DSM’s removal of homosexuality as a disease has in part contributed to our woke culture that says people are born as a homosexual with homosexual desires. Nowadays, heteronormativity is looked down upon. Target, Bud Light, and multiple other companies have embraced the LGBTQ community. In the word of Isaiah, “woe to those who call evil good and good evil”[9] In Isaiah:1, God asks who will I send? Isaiah is willing to go wherever God sends him in the midst of much sin and rebellion. During this time, Israel is being judged and Assyria is invading in the North. Isaiah starts to warn the nation of Judah of impending judgment just as the North is being judged by God. Isaiah was willing to stand up and be used even in a culture full of rebellion and impending judgment. We need to be the next Isaiah and stand up for God’s truth in this perverse and crooked generation who calls evil good and good evil.

                                         What is our Sexual Identity?

More than ever people are confused, deceived, and taken away by lies. As Christians that

stand for the truth, we need to know the truth and have a universal standard for truth- The Bible. In Colossians 2:8, Paul warns us that we should “see to it that no one take you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” Dale Johnson exclaims that embracing homosexuality is “disconnecting from moral authority and embracing biological authority.”[10] The person who embraces homosexuality excuses his behavior by saying “I was born this way.” Nowadays, people identify themselves by their sexual identity. Just as Christians identify themselves as Christ followers, a homosexual will say “I am gay.” He further prolcaims that this is his lifestyle and how he lives as a way of life and that there’s nothing he can do about it. According to one study, 20% of Generation Z identifies as LGBTQ. As Biblical counselors, it’s important to see and realize how a counselee primarily see themselves. Do they see their identity as homosexual? Many LGBTQ believe in gender dysphoria- their perceived gender doesn’t align with their biology. Radical solutions including hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgery are rampant even in children.

Going on, some heterosexuals give themselves a “sin pass.” They figure that they aren’t as bad as the homosexual because that’s a “special sin.” The truth of the matter is that all sin falls short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). The Bible doesn’t say that only homosexuals will experience eternal torment. The Bible says that any sin that goes against a perfect, holy God can send us to hell. But the hope for the homosexual and heterosexual is Christ’s death and resurrection. His blood atoned for our sins if we would repent and believe. Our primary identity is not in homosexuality or any other sin. We have one of two fathers. We are either of the devil or of God’s children. We are either of the baptism of the Holy Spirit or of the baptism of fire. Our hope is in Christ and Him crucified as our Lord and Savior.

                   Is Same-Sex attraction sinful?

The culture says as long as I’m not hurting anyone, it’s not sin. What does the Bible say? The Bible says that “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.’”[11] God isn’t concerned with just merely external actions but our hearts. Biblically, the heart (LEV) encompasses all of one’s thoughts, emotions, desires, and volition. Desiring immorality is an opportunity for repentance and returning to our Lord. Former homosexuals that are now Christians may experience same-sex attraction to those that aren’t his wife. From the heart flows the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23) As our heart goes, so go our actions. As Christians, we need to be cognizant of our thought processes because we are one step away from acting on those thoughts. Paul says that we are transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2) I would also go a step further- We are more conformed to the World if we don’t renew our mind with scripture. There is no such thing as stagnation. We are either being more conformed to Christ or more conformed to the World as the days go by. Same-sex attraction needs to be repented of because God cares about our hearts.

                                     The LGBTQ Hermeneutic

I debated whether or not I should even include a section on a false interpretation. After all, as Christians we should be focusing on the truth and what the Bible actually says. However, I do think it’s interesting to at least see where the professing LGBTQ “Christians” are coming from. It’s important to note that there are professing reformed LGBTQ “Christians” that are trying to promote and affirm the LGBTQ agenda and individuals. One such individual, Matthew Vines, founded the reformation project.[12] Matthew vines believes there is a Biblical case for affirming the LGBTQ as Christians despite passages such as 1 Corinthians 6:9, Genesis:19, Jude:7, and others. In the following analysis, I will start off with how the LGBTQ tries to use the Bible to affirm the LGBTQ community and follow up with what the Bible actually says about homosexuality in the next chapter.

According to Matthew Vines, a lot of LGBTQ Christians experience pain. Discrimination, and are not loved. His hermeneutic is not scripture alone but scripture + experience. He argues that people have been suppressing their sexual orientation because they grew up in a conservative environment. Because LGBTQ Christians are being hurt and excluded, there needs to be another way. Next, Vines argues that the church is setting a different standard for Gay people. After all, Jesus went out of his way to include people. To find the lost sheep or the lost coin. Jesus is the defender and protector of the marginalized. Because of the harmful effects of LGBTQ Christians, the LGBTQ community should be included. Suicide rates have soared among the LGBTQ community-Religious faith contributes to the suicide rate of the LGBTQ community.

According to Matthew Vines, “Our interpretation of scripture can be wrong. Our experience shouldn’t lead us to revise scripture, but should lead us to revisit our understanding of it.” Vines exclaims that false prophets lead to bad fruit. He says that an interpretation of scripture that leads to a lot of harm or bad fruit isn’t a good tree. His principle is that good teachings should bear good fruit (and not harm the LGBTQ community)

Biblically, covenant-keeping in marriage is between a man and a woman. Vines, on the other hand, argues that homosexuals are capable of the same covenant-keeping relationship- one that is monogamous and self-giving. Marriage is sanctifying. Be denying homosexuals marriage, we are denying them a path to “become more like God.” LGBTQ people should be grafted in to the Christian sexual ethic according to Vines. Homosexuals can have lifelong, monogamous, equal-status partnerships.

The Usury argument states that in OT times, usury deserved death. However, non-exploitative forms of usury became more common, allowing businesses to start. Today, non exploitative forms of usury have allowed businesses to start and has resulted in thriving economies. Biblical prohibitions have been reinterpreted based on the moral logic behind them says Vines.

What about passages such as Sodom and Gomorrah? Vines says God already planned to destroy Sodom and that no same-sex sin is connected to Sodom specifically. The sin in Sodom and Gomorrah is general. In Jeremiah 23:14, Jeremiah highlights others sins of Sodom and Gomorrah. He says that the sin of Sodom is arrogance, pride, and a failure to help the poor. The sins of Sodom and Gomorrah are related to general evil. In Genesis:19, the sin wasn’t homosexuality but the intention of evil- gang rape and going after other flesh. In Romans:1, Paul wasn’t condemning same-sex behavior but excess as opposed to moderation. Lastly, in 1 Corinthians 6:9, Vines argues that homosexuality is not an accurate translation. He says while arsenokoites may have referred to male same-sex behavior, it likely would have been exploitative forms of it.

The LBTQ hermeneutic requires interpreting the text as scripture plus experience. When we can reinterpret scripture however we want, any sin goes.

                     Thinking about Homosexuality Biblically

Biblically speaking, homosexuality is a sin and is not part of God’s design for the family. When Paul writes 1 Corinthians 6:9, he is writing literally- “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived, neither the sexually immoral, not idolaters, not adulterers, nor effeminate, not homosexuals, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” Going on, Jude declares that the cities of Sodom and Homosexual were set as an example for eternal fire- “just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, having indulged in the same way as these in gross sexual immorality and having gone after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.”[13] Next, homosexuality was severely judged in Genesis:19. In fact, the men of the city had such an unbridled lustful desire that they pursued the Angels in Lot’s house trying to find the doorway.”

According to John MacArthur, “The average homosexual has more than 500 different sexual partners. In Los Angeles, it’s even more prevalent- 300 per year or almost 1 different sexual encounter per day. 30% have had over 1,000 partners. Many have had over 1,500. Partners average 10-30 encounters every night in San Francisco bathhouses.” For the Christian, these statistics are generally foreign and unfathomable. Homosexuality is a special sin in the sense that it is unbridled, uncontrolled lust. God destroyed cities because of this sin. Going on, In Isaiah 3:9, Isaiah pronounces judgment on Jerusalem and Judah saying “The expression of their faces answers against them, and they declare their sin like Sodom; they do not even conceal it. Woe to their soul!” [14] Next, God gives people up to their passions as the wrath of abandonment. Paul outlines this concept in Romans 1:18- “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them……..for this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions; for their females exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the males abandoned the natural function of the female and burned in their desire toward on another, males with males committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them over to an unfit mind, to do those things which are not proper.” [15]

So what is the solution to Homosexuality? Just like any other sin, the solution to Homosexuality is the transforming power of the Gospel. In Romans:5, Paul talks about how we were once of our federal head, Adam. But now we have Christ as our federal head- “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the trespass of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. But the gracious gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound the many………..For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” [16]By believing in Christ, one is justified through faith by God’s grace. Even believing in Christ and repenting are gifts granted to us by God (Philippians 1:29, 2 Timothy 2:25)

                                  Conclusion

Homosexuality is treated differently in the Bible. God judges homosexuality severely. However, in another sense, homosexuality is like any other sin. All sin is sin against a holy God that is worthy of eternal punishment. As Biblical counselors, we need to make sure that we are using the proper hermeneutics in an LGBTQ culture. Passages like 1 Corinthians 6:9 are talking about literal homosexuality and not just merely excess desire like some churches try to claim. The way we interpret scripture will drastically affect our life and the way we live out the Gospel in a world that even tries to use scripture to justify their sin. As Biblical Counselors, we need to be aware of churches trying to claim Christ and homosexuality using “Biblical Counseling.” Historically, churches have always misused the Gospel and scripture to suit their agenda. Today, the LGBTQ community is using a form of false Biblical counseling to affirm their members. However, true Biblical Counseling points people to the way, the truth, and the life. True Biblical Counseling uses proper hermeneutics and exegesis to point people away from sin and toward righteousness. There is hope in Jesus Christ. Even through the trials, ideologies, and evil of this age, we can trust that Scripture is infallible, inerrant, and sufficient. Eternity is coming. There is great opportunity in this present age to be a light in a culture that doesn’t believe in truth anymore. One day the trump will sound. Justice will be served. And we will be with God for eternity. Stay faithful.

               Sanctification  Homework Assignments

                  Answers to Homework Assignments

  1. God is Holy. Since God is Holy, I’m motivated to be Holy in this life. Holiness stems from his love for He first loved us. If we love Him, we will keep His commandments. Knowing that God is always watching is a humbling reality. We know we can’t get  away with anything and we will give an account. Knowing this provides a catalyst for Holy living.
  2. I love Titus 2:10-12 because it talks about living righteously in light of our blessed hope.
  3. I’m involved in Steadfast Bible Study with Brian, Foundation with Mark Z, greeting team, evangelism, and adventure club.
  4. I desire to be in the Word! If I didn’t, I’d question my salvation (John:8). I read in the mornings.
  5. I serve in different capacities as outlined above.
  6. I pray for God’s will to be done. It’s not perfect and I probably need more work on my prayer life!
  7. I get up to give God glory and live in light of eternity. As I’ve grown, I’ve realized that ultimately, nothing else matters. Sure, I’ll be responsible, work hard, be diligent, etc. But even if nothing else is provided, we can be thankful for salvation.
  8. By God’s grace. I don’t feel qualified to lead. It’s the Word that sanctifies us and prayer which can be used as a means to accomplish God’s purposes.
  9. I believe I work hard. I substitute teach, teach chess and teach tennis. I’m also in the process of starting a sole proprietorship and getting my own clients.
  10. Philippians 2:12 and beholding Christ.
  11. I want to be sanctified because every Christian is called to holiness. We want to give a good account in light of the coming day!
  12.  My plan is God’s sovereignty. The Lord is the one who provides a wife. I’m involved in church and fellowship. We try and trust with great joy no matter what the Lord provides.
  13. I live with 3 seminary guys that got to TMS. They have been a blessing!
  14. I have strong desires but I don’t have to have anything. We should cultivate thankfulness for what the Lord provides!
  15. I’ve been free for 8 years. Accountable 2 you has been helpful. Lust is all about getting and using. It’s important to be free in this area so that we can develop patterns of giving.
  16. I live for Christ and eternity. Living for anything else is insane. This life compared to eternity is very small.
  17. Some of my goals include finishing this program, starting a new career, developing as a Godly man, and marriage. However, as Christians, it’s important to make goals and plans with a loose hand. The Lord can give and take away. Your plans may not be the Lord’s plans. The Lord could rapture his church at any time. Get ready.

A Biblical Counseling Framework

What is Biblical Counseling? Why am I writing this post?

I think some of us have missed the mark when it comes to Biblical Counseling. If you are a Christian, you are a Biblical Counselor. Essentially, Biblical Counseling is discipleship. You can do that informally or formally within the context of the local church. But we all disciple and need to be equipped. In a general sense, the goal of Biblical counseling is to help someone fulfill the commands of the Bible to be sanctified and pursue the means of sanctification- The Word, Fellowship, Prayer, Obedience, Providence.

How have we missed the mark?

Biblical Counseling doesn’t start with us trying to fix someone and their problems. Biblical Counseling starts with us and a humble mindset. We need to be self-reflective and think through the goals, assumptions, attitude, data gathering, and presentation of information.

Goals

The goals of Biblical Counseling is to help the counselee become more like Christ. Being in the Word, Fellowship, and prayer are not optional. Philippians 2:4- Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also the interest of others. It is in the best interest of the counselee to be pursuing the means of sanctification. In fact, scripture commands us to be holy like God is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). We are commanded to live in such a way that our lifestyle is marked by obedience. We live out our identity in Christ as believers. Ephesians 4:1- “Walk worthy of the calling with which you have been called.” When you counsel others, are you encouraging the means of sanctification in that individual’s life?

Be in The Word

Proverbs 4:5- “Get Wisdom; get insight; do not forget and do not turn away from the word of my mouth.” For more about being in the Word, see my other blog post- https://forhisglory.net/2022/12/25/where-is-your-treasure/

Fellowship and Community

As believers, we need each other. There is no such thing as an isolated Christian. We fall, miss the mark, and need each other to hit the target of sanctification again. The mark of a Christian is love for the brothers and sisters in the body. 1 John 4:7- Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and loves God. The most loving thing you can do for a believer is to encourage them in the means of sanctification. Not only is sanctification commanded, it’s part of the Christian’s identity.

Be aware of assumed motivations

Assuming motivations

Have you assumed someone’s motivation? Assuming motivations is common for Pastors, Biblical Counselors, Husbands, Wives, and ordinary Christians. From a personal standpoint, we need to assess our own motivations. Our heart is deceitful. The Psalmists proclaims in Psalm 139- “Search me o God and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there is any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” In addition, 1 Corinthians :13 says- “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” In other words, love perseveres and stays with the other person. Love believes the best about another person’s motives. Love believes believers are operating out of the best of intentions and are working for the Lord. In the words of Tim Challies- “It is sinful to assume bad motives. It is sinful to not assume good motives.”

Be aware of dismissing what the other person has to say

Sometimes we can be guilty of dismissing what the other person has to say because we are mad, angry, or frustrated with the other party even if they bring up scripture. Emotions become the primary center of control instead of what the Word of God says. This is indeed a very dangerous place to be. As we listen to what someone has to say, we need to make sure we are interpreting it accurately.

Confrontation

Along with encouragement comes confrontation. As we encourage others toward the means of sanctification, we rebuke and exhort in a loving manner that wants to see a changed life. Galatians 6:1- “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.”

Good Biblical CounselingMissing the Mark
Encouraging others to be in the Word, fellowship, prayer as a reflection of that individual’s identity in Christ, and commands in the Bible to pursue these things.Discouraging others from pursuing the means of sanctification
Believing the Best about someone’s motives (1 Corinthians:13) Assuming ill motives and intentions
Coming alongside and restoring for their benefit (Galatians 6:1/Philippians:2) Having a motive to slander/gossip instead of edify and encourage
Gathering good data to get the whole storyBelieving only one side of the story without getting the full picture
Self reflection that results in Humility, helping the other person, encouraging in the means of sanctification, pointing to the Word of God. Pride that doesn’t want to help the other person. Counseling becomes about self, own emotions, etc.
UnifiesDivides and isolates
Hears what the other person has to sayDismisses what the other person says
Edifies Gossips/slanders
Rebukes in a gentle manner with the goal of helping them become more like Christ.Rebukes in a harsh matter with ill motives. The goal isn’t to help the counselee.
Asks what made you do that? Tends to be less confrontational/assuming motives. Gets the point accross.Uses why questions- tends to assume ill motives and puts counselee on the defensive.
Biblical counseling exposes but also edifies and lifts upBiblical Counseling merely extends to exposing sin and immaturity

The Corinthian Church wasn’t acting the way they were supposed to, being involved in sexual immorality and even not believing in the resurrection correctly (1 Corinthians:15). But what does Paul call them? Saints. They missed the mark and needed correction on certain issues so that they could more fully conform to Christ and live out their identity. Thier practice wasn’t matching their identity but Pual lovingly confronted them and set them back on track.

What if my heart is not right? What should I do? If a believer has a heart that does things for the wrong motives, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do what the Bible commands. It’s never right to sin doubly. Do the right thing, live out your identity in Christ, and repent of any heart motives. Only God can grant a heart of true repentance that wants to live for Him, His purposes, and His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)

I have missed the mark when counseling others. I’ve seen others miss the mark when counseling others as well. People in the church need to live out their identity in Christ, pursue the means of sanctification, obey the commands of the Bible, assume Godly motivations, and counsel others for their benefit. Although simple, practically applied, we miss the mark. We are all Biblical Counselors in the church. As Biblical counselors, we need to reflect on our own hearts first, encourage others in the means of sanctification, and confront others in a gentle spirit that aims to restore and make someone more like Christ. This is the goal of Biblical Counseling. Is this how you Counsel?

Habakkuk (Credits- Gary Hamrick of Cornerstone Church)

06/10/2023

What is the answer to your happiness? Some think it’s financial security, power, friends, a house, children, getting married, sex, material items. The list goes on. The truth of the matter is that none of these things ultimately satisfy. Whatever stage of life you are in doesn’t determine your happiness. Happiness is a choice. Trials can be hard. People lose loved ones, dreams are dashed, financial crisis occurs, and marriages collapse. But it is the Godly man and Godly woman who trusts in the Lord no matter what God brings with great joy. Today we will be looking at the book of Habakkuk and how men of the Bible trusted in our great God despite the ever going trials of life.

The book of Habakkuk occurs just before the Babylonian invasion of Judah, just around 600 B.C. Nothing is really known of Habakkuk. Habakkuk is atypical in that it doesn’t challenge a specific group of people but is a dialogue between Habakkuk and God. The essential questions of Habakkuk are the following:

Why does God allow evil to exist?

If God is sovereign, why do the evil prosper?

Is it a sin to question God? It’s not a sin but may show our child-like understanding of who God is. We see people questioning God all throughout the Bible. In Isaiah 55:8-9 we see this- “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares Yahweh. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” God can do whatever he wants when he wants. His ways are not always what we think He should do. We don’t always understand. But we trust Him no matter what and praise him no matter what comes. A lack of trust is really not trusting in the Character of God. God is good and sovereign- Complaining about what He is doing is really saying I know better. I want to be God. My way is better. I want what I want regardless of what you want. Cater to my desires. They are more important.

Throughout the Bible we see many men questioning God and what He is doing . We see Moses called out of Midian to confront Pharaoh and ask him to release the Egyptians. Pharaoh responds by taking away the straw; the glue that holds the bricks together. The slaves have to work harder now. In Exodus 5:22 we see Moses asking questions like “Why have you sent me?” He has acknowledged that the people have not yet been delivered yet and the people are in more hardship. Moses doesn’t understand.

In Jeremiah 12:1 we see Jeremiah questioning God’s judgments. He says Righteous are you, O Yahweh, when I would plead my case with You; Indeed i would speak matters of justice with you: Why has the way of the wicked succeeded? Why are all those who deal in treachery complacent? You have planted them; they have also taken root. Jeremiah is questioning the justice of God and wondering why the Wicked succeed.

In Psalm 10:1 we see the Psalmist asking why do you stand far off? Why do you hide in times of trouble? And is Psalm 44:24- Why do you hide your face and forget our affliction?

There are many, many examples. Job is so distraught that he asks God, “Why did I not perish at birth and die as I came from the womb? “Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul, to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure?” (Job 3:20-21) “What is mankind that you make so much of them, that you give them so much attention?” (Job 7:17)”Why have you made me your target? Have I become a burden to you?” (Job 7:20)”Why do you not pardon my offenses and forgive my sins? For I will soon lie down in the dust; you will search for me, but I will be no more.” (Job 7:21)”Why do you hide your face and consider me your enemy?” (Job 13:24)

We have many, many questions about God. Back to Habbakuk, we see a shift. We see what God is doing through the evil nation of the Chaldeans or Babylonians (Same nation). God says- “For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans…..” What is God raising up the Chaldeans for? To discipline the nation of Judah. Ironically, the Chaldeans think their own God is giving them success “They whose power is their god” – Little g. The Chaldean’s god and not the God of the Bible. The real reason they are successful is becasue they are the instrument of God’s discipline.

The second question of Habakkuk- “You are going to use the Babylonians to correct a people more righteous than they?” Habakkuk is comparing the nations. He can’t understand why a more wicked nation would correct a less wicked nation who is “more righteous.” However, we are all wicked. Our righteous deeds are like filthy rags (Isaiah:66)

So how do we live when life doesn’t make sense? When we don’t understand what God is doing? Habakkuk 2:2-2 “But the righteous will live by faith.” This verse is quoted 3 times in the New Testament referring to salvation (Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:13, Hebrews 10:37) But in context, it’s talking about how to live when times are difficult. The same faith that requires trusting in God when times are difficult is the same faith that is required for salvation. Faith is an every day process trusting in the Character of God and what He is doing knowing that it is good and for His purposes (Romans 8:28).

So what do we see? We see a transition from Questioning God to Trusting God to Rejoicing in God. In Psalm 5:11, we see the correlation between trust and rejoicing. “But let all who take refuge in You be glad, Let them ever sing for joy; And may You shelter them, that those who love your name may exult you.” We don’t necessarily rejoice in the circumstance but in the Lord who gives us Salvation. In the Lord who is Sovereign and knows all things.

What is Habakkuk’s attitude at the end of the Book? At the end of the book Habakkuk chooses to rejoice in God despite the trials of life. He says that even though the fig tree should not blossom, no produce on the vines, the yield of the olive should fail, the fields yield no food, the flock is cut off from the fold, no cattle in the stalls, He will still exult in Yahweh. He will rejoice in the God of my salvation! What a Godly Perspective! Are we like Habakkuk in the trials of life rejoicing no matter what God brings? Are we like Job who confesses His Ignorance of Yahweh’s ways in Job:42. In fact, lets go to Job:42-

How does Job respond? “Then Job answered Yahweh and said, “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand, things too marvelous for me, which I did not know. Hear, now and I will speak; I will ask You, and You make me know. I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye sees you; therefore I reject myself and I repent in dust and ashes.

Job now understands that He must repent and embrace God’s ways. He is sovereign and in control.

Prayer for today- Yahweh, I want to repent of trying to control my own life. You are sovereign and we are responsible. We try but trust in you for all of the results of life. I pray that we can be like Habakkuk who moves from questioning to trusting to rejoicing in the trials of life. He rejoices no matter what God give Him throughout life. Lets be like Job and repent of questioning God and being angry at God- we want to acknowledge who you are and that you are in control. We know people are going through financial hardship, marriage hardships, desiring a wife, wanting to be in control, death of loved ones, cancer, medical issues. May we have the perspective of Habakkuk and Job through the trials of life and embrace who God is. May we be the righteous who live by faith. The same faith that saved us and continues on in our daily lives. Because we know who you are. We know that you are sovereign. You are in control. May we rejoice in who you are despite the trials of life. Give us the grace to have this perspective. We can’t do it ourselves. Yahweh, you are great and we can praise you no matter what you bring. Praise the Lord!
